A pleasant and interesting walk through the Grotto Reserve along the northern side of the mighty Shoalhaven River. My walk begins in Yurunga Drive, but east of the usual starting point. The path descends from the Upper Grotto (above the cliffs that edge the river) to the lower Grotto track. The track then brings the walker by the ruins of an old farm house, (which belonged to a John Hanson in the 1920s) through the remains of his orchard. The path continues through the rain-forest that grows along the strip of land between cliffs and river. Striking sights along the way include tree ferns, towering ash trees and a giant fig tree. The turn-around point of my walk was where the path comes close up against the cliff face. On the return path, a different link is taken to the Upper Grotto track. On the steep climb through this link section, rocks have been arranged to create steps through giant boulders. Along the upper Grotto Track there are various fenced lookouts. Emerging briefly from the bush, I walked along Yurunga Drive. It was November and Jacaranda trees were in spectacular bloom along the street. Then my track re-enters the bush to return to where my vehicle was parked.
