Most of the time you hear them, before you see them.
The starting point is the same as for the Dead Burro hike, but we drove a bit further uphill.
Hike further along the jeep road as it drops into the wash.
Hike up the wash and keep closer to the mountains on the left.
Past the fence at point "flat" you should hike on a burro trail.
Make sure you find the burro trail that keeps on the right side, a bit above the wash.
This burro trail makes the hike a lot easier.
Over a saddle with white rocks.
Turn left on a burro trail. Try to find the burro trails in the right direction.
Stay as much as possible on the burro trails. The trail tends to run a bit out of the canyon a way easier part to hike on.
Burro's are great at finding an easy route.
Hike down a wide canyon. Be careful to check how to get back, because from the other side everything looks the same and there are plenty of wrong turns to be made.
The cove is rather uneventful as a lot of coves are. A lot of vegetation, not much view.
If you have some energy left, explore the other canyon to the left.
Follow it as far as you can. But be aware, this is a real maze.
But the canyon is beautifully glowing red.
We missed what we came for, at point "Wash 4" turn into the canyon to the west.
There should be some white rocks over there.
Thats towards River Island.
This is a very long hike, you may not walk in the same pace we did, so prepare for an even longer hike.
Hiking time: 6 Hour, 20 minutes return.
From January - July this area is closed for vehicles. Add 1 hour to hike to the start point.
