This walk is far more achievable and less time consuming than the very popular East Peak of Mt Barney but it still offers its fair share of stunning views as well as interesting scrambles over rocky ridgelines. The walk begins from a fire trail which heads left at a sharp right turn in the 4WD access track as you reach the ridgeline. The 4WD access track heads from the waterfall creek campground up towards cleared ridge (and at the time this walk was done the trailhead was only accessible to 4WD's with high clearance). There is limited parking available at the beginning of the fire-trail (space for a maximum of 3 vehicles). Alternatively, Mt May can be accessed directly from Waterfall Creek Campground, though the nature of this path is unknown to me.

The walking track starts off on the fire trail but soon relents to a footpad before steeply ascending the southern ridgeline towards the peak. Near the top a short scramble is required over a rocky bluff and some parties may need to use a rope at this point. Soon the south peak is reached where excellent views over Lake Maroon and Western Mt Barney National Park are provided (though some of the best are available on the way up).

To descend down to the saddle it is best to head down the north-east ridge line rather than going down directly as this path is much less steep. It may be difficult to find the footpad from the summit initially so don't be concerned if the path down is not immediately obvious. An ephermeral stream is reached below the saddle which is crossed with a,well defined path heading uphill briefly and then east from here along the ridgeline. This path presumably heads to the Waterfall Creek campground and after a short foray in this direction with limited views offered the party turned back and headed for the north peak of Mt May.

To attain the path to the north peak from the creek crossing, head up to the east/west running ridgeline, though the path will not be obvious till you reach this point. From here there is an obvious footpad heading up to the north summit of Mt May. This point offers the best views of Main Range and Lake Maroon. A footpad descends directly south from the summit with this route requiring a short section of downclimbing (3m) and should be avoided if you are not comfortable with this. The route then heads west along the base of the cliff line to the western escarpment before heading south back the saddle. The route up to the south peak from here becomes confusing, and there are many tracks present. This is further enhanced by the diagonal sloping cliff breaks present which can be observed from the gpx track taken. The path taken on this route did not involve climbing any of these small cliffs, though it appears some of the tracks previously used by people have. After many cutbacks soon you arrive back at the south summit and can continue back down the southern ridgeline to the vehicles.

A photo attempting to provide an appreciation of the incredibly strong wind on the day (likely gusting around 80km/hour) as we walked back down the south ridgeline https://pt.wikiloc.com/trilhas-trekking/mt-may-18946722/photo-11904170
