This is a great walk, one of my favourites and is the hike I take any first timers to Barney. SE ridge is a lot more difficult than than South Ridge but the views are sensational. BE WARNED, there is exposure and scrambling up steep rock and over 1000m of elevation gain over 3km. The trail is well worn and little navigation problems arise. However, if clouds roll in visibility can drop and the route down to rum jungle can get confusing with the potential of getting lost. There is thick vegetation and forest in the valley between east and west peaks and the trail is usually well taped. However, don't underestimate this mountain, be prepared for the worst.

Excellent intro to the great Barney

Easily my favourite SEQ hike to date. SE ridge in particular is great fun. I like Old Hut over Rum Jungle personally, but both are beautiful and Rum Jungle is a bit better protected. Good stream in the saddle near the bush camp sites to fill up your water supply. To anyone planning on taking this route (or any that pass through the saddle) please be considerate to other hikers and don't go to the toilet in or near the stream!

Excellent track and a great help in keeping you on route when the flagging tape gives out on the descent to the Rum Jungle . Track even more helpful when the South Ridge track disappears under several fallen gum trees.

I am not too sure about the water quality at Rum Jungle. The camp smelled like a leaking septic system at the point where I crossed the stream below the saddle. Going as far upstream as possible to collect water would be a good idea.

Went up south east ridge and down rocky creek.
A walk for the advanced hiker especially down rocky creek, don't forget your GPS.

Navigation: Difficult. Track using Peasant ridge (west approach) to Barney West peak are well defined tracks. From West peak, it is a thick bus area and you will need navigate to the saddle towards Rum Jungle camping ground using defined tracks. The ascent to the East peak is not defined, however the East peak ascent from the saddle is 100% exposed and you can clearly see where to go (as well as see people coming down). At top of East peak, there are several well defined tracks heading out and hence it is difficult to find the correct track that leads to the SE ridge - once you are on the southern area (as opposed to southern tip) of East peak, look for a it straight east. It will go east first for very short distance before re-correcting to SE. Once on the SE ridge, it will be a steep descent with a very small chimney like scramble at the beginning. On the sections where the ridge line is narrow, it is important to keep in touch with it as it is easy to wander down either side of it and effectively lose the SE ridge - I suggest frequent positioning checks on that narrow section. Beyond that, it is a defined track all the way down. The SE ridge is definitively easier to navigate on ascent then descent.

Fitness: Difficult. I was tested on this >1000 m elevation hike carrying a 15 kg pack. Aching on the knees coming down SE ridge.

Scenery: Super 360 degrees panoramic views from the East peak. There is a variety of vegetation from farmland, thick bush and exposed scrambling

Followed this route today. Was cloudy for most of the day, so very wet and slippery but spectacular when the clouds cleared (which was about 5 mins after we had left the summit). We went the wrong way down peasants for the second time, but it saved us from going down the slippery rocky pinch after the stairs, which was great. Thanks for the trail!

Would I be able to follow this route? Gps stay in range up there? I want to travel up from vic to do this and am looking for some people who’ve done it to go with. I was advised even though I have excellent fitness, it’s better to go with someone whose been before in case I get lost

We followed this track yesterday. It took our family 10 hours with 3 children. There was blood, sweat and tears. Great to have your track to guide us as we lost course once or twice and also helped others along the way who were lost. The red ribbons coming down the saddle were helpful too. Knees were gone by the end and we hobbled out just before dark after a 7.30 start. I would not do this hike with children. It is very long and dangerous in parts and I wondered if we were ever going to get down before dark. If anyone was injured you are too remote and you couldn’t be rescued easily.
