Itinerary description
Great walk in the Mullerthal area (Little Switzerland) with the spectacular sandstone rock formations. You start in Grundhof near the point where the Schwaarz Iernz flows into the Sauer. You can park here next to the road. You can find something to eat and drink in Berdorf, on the Martbusch camp site, and near the start in Grundhof. The hike offers forests, sandstone rock formations, canyons, viewpoints, meandering streams and pasture.
You directly head for the trail climbing out of the valley from Grundhof, on steps and a steep trail. You pass through the Saueruecht nature reserve. The trail is through forest, and when it gets higher you pass your first sandstone rock formations. The path climbs further onto the plateau. You walk south on the edge of the forest. You make a small detour to the viewpoint on sandstone rocks Kippiglay. The path then descends towards the Hallerbach. The last part to the CR364 road is steeper through sandstone rocks. You cross the road, and descend further amidst sandstone rocks to the Hallerbach. After having arrived to the Hallerbach, you descend along the stream towards the Schwaarz Iernz river, first through forest and then along a meadow with the meandering stream. You get to a minor road which takes you to the main road through the valley at Vugelsmillen, and then across the Schwaarz Iernz river. You then take a path up to Berdorf through the forest. After a while you get to the sandstone rock formations, and follow the gorge of the Ruetsbesch. There is a metal bridge taking you through part of the gorge. At the end of the gorge you take a path towards the Martbusch campsite. There is a bistro there if you want to have some lunch. You then descend into the valley again via the Römerwee. A path takes you along and above the sandstone formations to the viewpoint Teufelsinsel. You get back to the path and follow another path to the Adlerhorst viewpoint. You return and then go down a narrow gorge between the sandstone rocks. After a while you follow the Gorges du Roltzbach and then descend steeply to the entrance of the Raiberhiel cave. I did not take the entrance, but took the main path along and below the sandstone formations. I then had a look at the exit of the Raiberhiel cave. I returned to the path and then followed another path back to the Römerwee. You go up to Römerwee a bit and then take the main path again below and along the sandstone formations. This path takes you to the Berdorf Wanterbaach climbing site, where a lot of people were trying to climb the rocks. You pass by underneath, pass the Parcours Jean Siebertz and continue on the path to the viewpoint Berdorfer Casselt. From here you descend back to the valley, first through forest and then through pasture and along hedges, all the way to Grundhof. After crossing the river, you are back at the starting point.
