Dunkel Tea Factory

Dunkel Tea Factory situated on the banks of the Castlereagh reservoir owned by MJF Tea Gardens, a Dilmah Tea company. Dunkeld estate comprises of 220 hectares or 550 acres of high grown Ceylon tea, and the factory annually producing about 350,000 kgs of tea.

Castlereagh Reservoir

The Castlereagh Reservoir is one of Sri Lanka’s best-kept secrets; hidden in a valley and circled by tall green peaks, the reservoir is perhaps the most idyllic location in the hill country. The reservoir looks like something straight out of a fairytale: Apart from being incredibly beautiful, the reservoir is also vital for its adjoining power station, and it provides most of the electricity in the area. The reservoir also has an ‘airport’, since the drive to Hatton can be quite tedious, many people opt for taking a seaplane from Colombo which lands on the reservoir! A sight which would definitely excite anyone!

Buddhist Temple - Stupa

A Small Buddhist temple maintained by the staff members of the Electricity board , which is commonly used by the small community of buddhist around the Castlereagh & Osborne area. You can easily spot the Stupa (pagoda) at multiple locations on this trial because of its elevated construction.

Mariamman Kovil

Castlereigh Sri Muthumari amman Kovil. Amman Hindu temple which commonly used by both Hindu and Buddhist community around the Castlereagh & Dunkeld area. Mariamman, often abbreviated to Amman, is a Hindu goddess of rain, predominantly venerated in the rural hill areas of Sri Lanka .Her worship mainly focuses on bringing rains and curing diseases like cholera, smallpox, and chicken pox. Mariamman is worshipped in accordance with local traditions such as Pidari or the Gramadevata. She is also considered as a guardian deity by many hindu villagers.

Castlereagh Bungalow sits on the banks of Castlereagh Lake with stunning views across the water, sitting regal in its position overlooking the landscape. This century old bungalow captures the style of the colonial era in the region, with exquisite parquet floors and open fireplaces it evokes recollections of the life and times of the tea planters who once lived here.

Trail Corridor

This is the trail corridor which connects the Camellia Hills bungalow and starting point of all our tea and nature trail walks.

Creek Crossing

You will see this beautiful creek flowing through the tea estate. The physics of moving water is not in your favor, so be extra cautious while crossing during the rainy days where the water level goes over the trail. Though nobody likes wet shoes, your chances of slipping and falling go up exponentially when you’re barefoot.

Albizia Tree

The Albizia is a fast-growing tree, about 30 m tall, in nature with a massive trunk and an open crown. It is used as a valuable timber for furniture making, as a fuel wood, and fodder for cattle grazing.

The Road-side Shrine Tree

Roadside shrines dedicated to the Lord Shiva & Elephant-headed Lord Ganesh and other Hindu deities in tea estates by the roadside. These statues of Hindu deities wrapped in colourful sacred cloths. The banyan trees are favourite spots for the Tea Estate hindu community to build small roadside shrines. Someone places the statue, someone prays, eventually some people get together and build a small shrine around it, and before you know it, it becomes the local pilgrim spot.
